Jon Rahm shot a record-breaking 62 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the US Open. The Spaniard’s 10-under par round was the lowest ever score in the first round of a major championship.

Rahm started his round with a birdie on the first hole and never looked back. He birdied four of the first six holes and added another four birdies on the back nine. He finished his round with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.

Rahm’s 62 is two strokes better than the previous record for the lowest round in a major championship, which was set by Rory McIlroy at the 2011 British Open. Rahm’s score is also the lowest round ever recorded at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Rahm is followed in second place by Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick, who are both tied at 8-under par. Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland, and Keegan Bradley are tied for fourth place at 7-under par.

The US Open is the third major championship of the year. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

Jon Rahm is in a great position to win his first US Open title. He will need to continue his good play on Friday and Saturday if he wants to hold on for the victory.
